Endrick, the transfer nobody expected

Real Madrid starlet Endrick Felipe reminded the world just how talented he is on Wednesday night, with a two-touch finish that gave Los Merengues the lead in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad. With Kylian Mbappé absent due to tooth pain, Endrick was given a rare starting berth.

The 18-year-old arrived for €40 million plus €20 million in bonuses from Palmeiras this summer, and impressed with two goals in his first five appearances, despite playing just 20 minutes. The teenage starlet was deprived of opportunities overall, however, and played just 474 minutes in total over the course of the season. In total, Endrick has played just four times since kick-off, although he has scored six times, and only once has he started in competitions other than the Copa.

Endrick to go out on loan

During the winter mercato, rumors circulated that he could leave on loan for more playing time, but this was dismissed by Carlo Ancelotti, and the club apparently turned down an approach in late January from West Ham United. Diario AS reported that a meeting between Endrick, his agents and Real Madrid will take place at the end of the season to discuss the interest of a loan.

The fact that Mbappé has settled in as a clear number nine for Real Madrid is now a major obstacle to Endrick’s development and playing time, given that the Frenchman is likely to play the vast majority of games. In addition, Endrick is reportedly keen to claim a place in Brazil’s World Cup 2026 squad. He recently dropped out of the race and will need minutes to join Raphinha, Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Junior again. Carlo Ancelotti has preached patience to Endrick and Arda Guler, but it’s understandable that he wants more game time.
