Etienne Eto’o has opened up about his father Samuel, the Cameroonian striker legend.
Although he had said at the start of his career that he did not have a very close relationship with his father Samuel Eto’o, Etienne affirmed the opposite in a recent interview with Radioestadio Noche.
Samuel Eto’o’s relationship “very good”, according to Etienne
The Rayo Vallecano striker confided that he now enjoys a better relationship with the former Cameroon star (118 caps, 56 goals), who is now President of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot).
“The relationship with him (Samuel Eto’o) is now very good, this mental stability has benefited me a lot because it coincided with my best moment.”
Proud to bear the Eto’o name
Having made his first appearance in the Spanish league with the first team on February 22 (a 0-1 defeat by Villarreal CF), and following an excellent performance with the reserves (21 goals in 23 games), the 22-year-old centre-forward aspires to follow in his illustrious father’s footsteps. The latter, whose name is a heavy legacy to bear.
“For me, bearing my father’s surname is a source of pride, and I know he’s super proud and excited about this new step on my part. Seeing all that my father has been able to achieve, coming from nowhere… for me, he’s a reference and his example helps me move forward because I’ve always wanted to be a footballer.”
The dream of playing against Real Madrid
Left on the bench last weekend against Sevilla (1-1), the Palma de Mallorca native hopes to play a few minutes next Sunday against Real Madrid, Samuel Eto’o’s former club at the start of his career.
“Everyone dreams of playing in stadiums like the Bernabéu. This whole year has been a dream. I’m very grateful to Íñigo for giving me this opportunity,” he said in a statement relayed by Marca. A goal against his father’s favourite ex-victim would be the icing on the cake.
