After Spain’s victory at Euro 2024, player Lamine Yamal broke a record previously held by Pelé, the Brazilian football legend.
On the evening of Sunday, July 14, 2024, the young Spaniard once again proved himself during the match against England. While he didn’t score, he provided an assist that allowed his team to take the lead.
Ultimately, the two teams parted ways with a score of 2-1 in favor of Spain, a dream come true for the forward.
Thanks to Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, Lamine Yamal becomes the youngest male player to win a major cup, a record previously held by Pelé.
The Spanish player surpassed the Brazilian legend, who was 17 years and 244 days old when he won the 1958 World Cup with Brazil. Lamine Yamal, at 17 years and 1 day old, thus exceeded him.
It is worth mentioning that the Pelé Foundation recently honored the young player even before the Euro 2024 final. Following his qualification for the competition’s semi-finals with his team, he had already achieved a great feat. The Pelé Foundation thus paid tribute to him via social media with the following words:
“Football is made of symbols. And this week, we saw Pelé’s significant record broken by a boy named Lamine Yamal.
This young boy becomes the youngest player to reach a semi-final in major national team tournaments.
Pelé played against France in the 1958 World Cup at the age of 17 years and 244 days.
It is precisely against the same opponent that the Spanish player started the match at the age of 16 years and 362 days.
The Pelé Foundation congratulates Lamine Yamal on this important milestone in his career and hopes it is the first step in a long and fruitful journey.”
