FC Barcelona midfielder Gavi made a surprising choice for his Ballon d’Or candidate, excluding teammates Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.
FC Barcelona are in the midst of La Liga and the Champions League, which explains why two of their attacking stars, Raphinha and, to a lesser extent, Yamal, have been consistently cited as likely winners of this year’s award.
For Gavi, however, neither player deserves it more than his club and country teammate, Pedri.
Gavi’s words
On the evening of Tuesday, March 11, 2025, FC Barcelona beat Benfica in the Champions League, and Gavi came on as a substitute to help the Blaugrana win the match.
Pedri, who played the full 90 minutes, was brilliant in midfield and was awarded Man of the Match, despite Yamal and Raphinha scoring a goal and assisting.
Gavi shares the opinion of UEFA’s Technical Committee, which praised Pedri’s quality. He went on to state that no player in world football deserved to win the Ballon d’Or more than the former Las Palmas player.
“No one deserves the Ballon d’Or more than Pedri, everyone knows what kind of player he is,” Gavi said, according to Football Espana.
The form of players like Pedri has limited Gavi’s playing time in the team.
Originally a central midfielder, he has had to earn his minutes playing as a number 10, as the deeper positions are occupied.
This situation has led to speculation about his future, but Gavi has stated that he is not even considering leaving Barcelona.
