The level of play in current football is considered by several former players turned consultants or coaches to be lower compared to the past.
Many of them insist that nowadays football has become more calculated and easier than it was years ago. Among those advocating this position is the former Brazilian international, Romario.
The legend of the Brazilian national team believes he would have been even more brilliant if he had played football at the top level today. The former player doesn’t hesitate to say he would have scored over 2000 goals if he had pursued his career in today’s era.
Romario points out that football now emphasizes physical and athletic abilities more than technical qualities. According to him, players from his era were not only good physically but also smarter and more technical.
“I think if I were a player today, I would have scored more than 2,000 goals because players have become stupid. They run a lot. In my time, football was also physical, it always has been, but players were more technical and smarter,” he said.
This position is also supported by other great Brazilian players from the past such as Cafu and Ronaldo (R9).
