Accused of racism, José Mourinho has received a 4-match suspension. On Thursday March 6, he took to the podium to defend himself.

The racism affair may have shaken the shores of the Bosphorus, but José Mourinho seems to be resting easy. Indeed, speaking to Sky Sports, the Portuguese coach was less than courteous towards Galatasaray.

José Mourinho unleashes claws at racism accusation

“They weren’t smart to attack me,” he began, before adding: ”They didn’t know about my connection with Africa, Africans and African players, with charities in Africa.

They had no idea about my past. And I think that instead of going against me, it will have had a boomerang effect against them.

I have to thank the people who have no problem with me. Especially my guys, my former African players who have an important voice.

But the most important thing is that I know who I am. Of course attacking me on racism was a bad choice,” he added.

José Mourinho is referring to the special bond he has forged with African players at the various clubs he has played for.

José Mourinho is far from racist

Mourinho has always considered Didier Drogba to be his son. The Special One was also a mentor to players such as John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien during his time at Chelsea.

Not only was José Mourinho instrumental in signing Emmanuel Adebayor for Real Madrid, he also succeeded in bringing Essien to the Spanish capital. What’s more, all these players have fonder memories of José Mourinho.

José Mourinho therefore saw the accusation of racism as an injustice. What’s more, Fenerbahce have decided to appeal against the 4-match suspension.

The Portuguese coach had suggested that the Galatasaray bench “jumped like monkeys”. It was this phrase that ignited the fire, as the atmosphere between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce has always been electric.
