Liverpool FC, the giants of the Premier League, have officially announced that Arne Slot will succeed Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach.

Arne Slot’s appointment has been an open secret in recent weeks, but Liverpool had to resolve negotiations with Feyenoord as he was still under contract with the Dutch club.

They have now reached an agreement and subsequently announced his appointment.

Liverpool announces the big news

Liverpool announced via its official channels that they have reached an agreement for Arne Slot to become their new manager, subject to the issuance of a work permit in the UK, and he will start his tenure on June 1st.

The Reds immediately scoured the market when their manager of the last nine years, Jürgen Klopp, announced he would be stepping down at the end of the just-concluded campaign.

Liverpool had been linked with names like Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen and Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon to replace Jürgen Klopp; however, they swiftly settled on Slot and focused on him.

Slot had a contract with last season’s Eredivisie champions, Feyenoord, until 2026, and Liverpool had to pay compensation to the Dutch club. According to the BBC, the Reds agreed to a substantial compensation package of £9.4 million to lure Slot away from The Pride of Rotterdam.

Arne Slot as a manager

Arne was a midfielder during his playing days and retired in 2013 while with Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle.

He began his coaching career at the same club, where he was appointed head of the PEC Zwolle youth team before moving on to Cambuur as an assistant coach.

His first senior coaching role came in 2019 at AZ Alkmaar, after which he was promoted to assistant manager.

He was sacked by Alkmaar in the last month of 2020 after being caught negotiating with Feyenoord, months after guiding Alkmaar to level points with Erik ten Hag’s Ajax before the league was abandoned due to Covid-19.

He spent 3 successful seasons with Feyenoord before joining Liverpool, winning the Eredivisie (2022/2023), the KNVB Cup (2023/2024), and finishing second in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League.
