Global soccer icon Kylian Mbappé has spoken out about the comparison between Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba, two legends of African soccer. Although his comments date back over a year, they continue to provoke passionate debate on social networks.
During his visit to Cameroon in July 2023, the player gave an interview to the Nouvelle Chaîne Ivoirienne (NCI). Asked about his preference between these two iconic figures, Mbappé skilfully avoided making a decision, preferring to celebrate their colossal impact on and off the pitch.
“Eto’o or Drogba? I’m not going to answer that question, because people might misinterpret it. If you choose one, they’ll think you’re denigrating the other. These two players have been too incredible to be pitted against each other. They left their mark on their countries and had an influence that goes far beyond soccer. I have nothing but respect for them,” declared Mbappé wisely.
Rather than making a choice, Mbappé opted for unanimous recognition of their achievements. He also hailed the impact of African soccer on the history of world sport, highlighting the historic performances of national teams such as Cameroon, Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire.
His admiration doesn’t stop with Eto’o and Drogba. During his stay in Cameroon, the world champion took part in social initiatives, including the renovation of a school for hearing-impaired children, testifying to his attachment to his Cameroonian origins and his commitment to important causes.
Didier Drogba is recognized as a hero in Côte d’Ivoire, having used his influence to promote peace in his country. Three-time Champions League winner Samuel Eto’o is considered one of the greatest strikers in world soccer history.
For Mbappé, paying tribute to these legends underlines the extent of their legacy, not only in Africa, but across the globe. In his words, he reminds us that the impact of these figures goes far beyond statistics, encompassing their social and human contributions as well.
