Even though a large majority of Madrilenians are welcoming Mbappé with open arms, some are quite critical of the Bondy native.
A new galactic star is set to join Real Madrid in the coming weeks. Unsurprisingly, the Bondy native has already confirmed his departure from Paris Saint-Germain and is set to sign with the Spanish capital’s club. Naturally, most supporters are pleased with this recruit, who will soon have the chance to add a 15th Champions League title to the team’s record on June 1st.
However, there are still some dissenters. For sporting reasons, many believe that Mbappé’s arrival isn’t necessarily needed, and that the Madrid management should prioritize signing a professional striker instead. Others are also somewhat concerned about his attitude and the potential problems he could cause if things were to go south. In recent hours, several significant voices have spoken out against the Frenchman in Spain.
Criticism abounds
“I don’t see him as a leader. He doesn’t have the ambition that other stars I’ve played with had. The Dortmund match made me see that he doesn’t have that character. Many great players don’t. For me, Mbappé’s semi-final was a disappointment, even the first leg of the quarterfinals. It was his time to prove himself,” said Guti, a Real Madrid legend, on the set of El Chiringuito de Jugones.
At Marca, a leading newspaper in Madrid and Spain, the tone is also critical. “Mbappé is an example that even having all the money in your bank account and all the luxuries it affords does not grant you access to the best advice on how to do things properly. Mbappé leaves Paris without the honors he deserves and will arrive in Madrid with a certain indifference,” reads an article published on Monday. “Mbappé bought the applause of the PSG ultras after dining with them,” said journalist Edu Pidal on Onda Cero. Quite the atmosphere…
