End-of-season revelation, the young Turkish midfielder told Kafa Sports that the Merengue club had promised him to be the heir to Luka Modric.

It’s not given to everyone to establish themselves at Real Madrid at 19. While he hasn’t yet earned his starting spot, Arda Güler has carved out his place in the Madrid rotation and even capitalized on his increased playing time to be decisive, scoring 5 goals in his last 5 Liga matches, including a brace in the spectacular draw against Villarreal (4-4). As he prepares to compete in Euro 2024 with Turkey, his first major international tournament, the Ankara native gave an interview to Kafa Sports in which he reflected on how the Spanish champions convinced him last summer to sign with them. “The project they offered me was long-term (…) Real Madrid told me I was going to be the heir to Luka Modric, and that impressed me because he’s an incredible player,” he revealed. That simple prospect was enough to make him don the Merengue jersey.

A challenging adaptation

In the company of the illustrious 38-year-old Croatian, Arda Güler underwent an accelerated learning curve in top-level football, enabling him to begin proving himself towards the end of the season. While his on-field development has been very positive, behind the scenes, the Turk admitted to adaptation difficulties due to the language barrier. “Everyone speaks Spanish, it’s very difficult at training,” acknowledges the young man, aware that he will have to improve quickly in the language of Cervantes to better understand Carlo Ancelotti’s instructions and flourish. With this in mind, he attends two hours of Spanish classes per week.
