Arriving at Manchester City in 2016, Pep Guardiola has accomplished an incredible feat, winning a total of 17 trophies, including six league titles and a Champions League.

Now in his eighth year at the club, he has already hinted that he is closer to the end than the beginning, with his contract expiring in 2025. An extension doesn’t seem to be on the horizon, as the Spanish coach might be tempted to take charge of a national team.

The question of succession will inevitably arise, and a new candidate will be highly sought after.

Xabi Alonso, Guardiola’s successor at City?
Indeed, according to information from the English press cited by Sport, Xabi Alonso is a potential candidate to succeed the Santpedor native. Intrigued by the prospect of leading the English champions, the former player of Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich has been endorsed by Guardiola himself, who sees him as his successor.

Now, it remains to be seen whether City can secure his signature, especially as Xabi Alonso is constantly linked with a move to Real Madrid to succeed Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite having a clause in 2025 allowing for an easier departure, Xabi Alonso has clearly stated his intention to continue with the club he guided to victory in the Bundesliga, and therefore towards an exciting challenge in the Champions League next season.

“There has been a lot of speculation about my future. We are very focused and want to concentrate on the end of the season. Last week, I met with the management and informed them that I wanted to remain as coach of Bayer Leverkusen. It’s important to take the time to analyze things, I took the time, and I felt that it was the right place for me to continue as a coach,” announced the Spanish coach.
