In a challenging season as Manchester United prepares for a major overhaul, Marcus Rashford’s future looks uncertain. One year after his contract extension, the English forward could be on the move.
Times are tough in Manchester. Following another draw against Burnley (1-1) this weekend, Manchester United currently sits sixth in the Premier League, and securing European football for the Red Devils will require a battle until the season’s end.
This tumultuous season is likely to bring about significant changes. With players like Raphaël Varane, Brandon Williams, and Anthony Martial approaching the end of their contracts, and others like Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Mason Greenwood rumored to be departing, according to The Telegraph, it seems that a major squad overhaul is on the horizon.
Moreover, another key player, Marcus Rashford (26 years old), who has been with the club since 2005 and came through the academy, is facing a difficult season. With only 8 goals and 5 assists in 40 appearances, he has struggled to perform. Despite signing a bumper contract extension in June 2023, keeping him at the club until June 2028, Rashford has failed to lead the team through the storm, unlike other players such as Kobbie Mainoo (19 years old), Alejandro Garnacho (19 years old), and Rasmus Hojlund (21 years old), according to the club’s management.
A complex situation arises as Manchester United aims to rely on its young talents, who will be deemed non-transferable next season. However, Rashford does not enjoy such status. Losing momentum, the 26-year-old is considered potentially dispensable by the Red Devils if an attractive offer comes in. While open to discussions, the English club knows that Paris Saint-Germain, set to lose Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid, could be an option, especially with much speculation in England favoring such a move.
Nevertheless, seeing Rashford leave Manchester United won’t be easy. With a weekly salary of £325,000, equivalent to €380,000, his wages could pose a significant obstacle for many clubs. Additionally, his young age and long-term contract mean that any potential suitors would likely need to pay a hefty fee to secure his services. It’s a costly proposition that might deter many potential buyers. However, Rashford is no longer deemed indispensable, marking a significant turning point in his Manchester United journey.
