Maradona, the Argentine legend, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 60, led Argentina to a 3-2 victory against West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico.

This includes the infamous “Hand of God” goal and the “Goal of the Century” during the 2-1 victory over England in the quarterfinals.

Maradona’s heirs now claim that the trophy has been stolen and that the current owner has no right to sell it.

As a result, Gilles Moreu, a lawyer from Paradox Lawyers, stated that he would submit an urgent request to the president of the Nanterre court, near Paris, for the Ballon d’Or to be withdrawn from auction.

She also told AP that she would seek judicial seizure of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and receiving stolen property.

On the other hand, Aguttes stated that the trophy resurfaced in 2016 among other items acquired from a private collection during an auction in Paris. As a reminder, Maradona received the award in 1986 at a ceremony at the Lido cabaret on the Champs Elysées. It then disappeared, leading to rumors.

Some say he lost it in a poker game or sold it to pay debts, Aguttes said.

Others claim that Maradona kept it in a safe deposit box in a Naples bank that was robbed by the local mafia in 1989, while he was playing in the Italian league.

Maradona’s heirs believe it was stolen from the bank. Moreu, representing two of Maradona’s daughters, asserts that the heirs recently discovered the trophy had been stolen and want to reclaim it.
