Throughout his remarkable career, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a significant number of memorable goals.
However, some of these goals have been subject to controversy, being scored from offside positions that went undetected by referees. One notable example is Ronaldo’s goal in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Bayern Munich during the 2016-2017 season, as revealed by Marcelo.
Long-time partners at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo shared an evident bond on the field. In the “PodPah” podcast, the Brazilian defender reminisced about memorable moments shared with CR7.
He specifically mentioned that the goal scored by the five-time Ballon d’Or Portuguese during the second leg of the 2016-2017 Champions League quarter-final against Bayern should not have been counted due to an offside position unnoticed by Ronaldo.
Match Context:
Following a 2-1 victory in the first leg at the Allianz Arena, Real Madrid faced Bayern Munich in a suspense-filled return encounter. After Lewandowski converted a penalty in the 53rd minute, Ronaldo equalized in the 76th minute. An own goal by Ramos in the 77th minute pushed the match into extra time. In the 104th minute, on a pass from Sergio Ramos, Ronaldo scored his second goal of the evening, although he was in an offside position, the goal was still allowed as the infringement went unnoticed by officials.
Ronaldo’s third goal, on a decisive pass from Marcelo who had just bypassed the Bavarian defense, was also scored from an offside position unnoticed by the referees, although Marcelo himself acknowledged the irregularity.
“Yes, it was offside. That’s true, but now, what’s the point of complaining?” Marcelo began, not without a smile. “I knew we were offside. I thought, ‘Oh no.’ Then I glanced at the referee, saw him continue, and I could breathe a sigh of relief,” he added, still laughing.
This goal gave Real Madrid the advantage (3-2) in the match, which eventually won 4-2, with another goal scored by Marco Asensio.
The goal scored in an offside position by Cristiano Ronaldo would have been impossible to validate today, unlike in the past.
The adoption of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in modern football ensures that each goal is meticulously reviewed and is disallowed if it results from an infringement.
