In June 2023, a police officer shot a young man named Nahel during a traffic stop that went awry. On social media, Kylian Mbappé expressed his support for Nahel’s family. Behind the scenes, Mbappé’s circle reached out to other key members of the French national team to coordinate a joint message.
This Sunday, Kylian Mbappé spoke out against the rise of extremism. The captain of the French national team urged young people to vote in the upcoming legislative elections to block the National Rally party, among others. This isn’t the first time the Real Madrid player has spoken on societal issues.
In June 2023, he didn’t hesitate to advocate for Nahel, killed by a police officer during a traffic stop. Mbappé had stated following Nahel’s death on X: “I hurt for my France. An unacceptable situation. All my thoughts go to Nahel’s family and loved ones, this little angel gone too soon.” His teammate Jules Koundé echoed a similar sentiment. According to reports from L’Equipe, Mbappé’s team concurrently contacted the associates of several French national team leaders to issue a collective message.
The French Football Federation (FFF) had released a joint statement amid the unrest following the incident. “Like all French citizens, we were shocked by the brutal death of young Nahel.
Since this tragic event, we have witnessed expressions of understandable public anger, yet we cannot condone the resultant actions. Many of us come from working-class neighborhoods and share the feelings of pain and sorrow. However, we also feel the helplessness of witnessing a self-destructive cycle. Violence solves nothing, especially when it inevitably and tirelessly turns back against those who express it,” read the statement.
