Kylian Mbappé is set to leave PSG this summer, following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and Neymar, marking the departure of the capital club’s third major star. However, this time, the recovery might be more challenging, as feared by Bixente Lizarazu.

It is now official: Kylian Mbappé has announced his departure from PSG. The captain of the French national team has not yet disclosed his future club, but he will be joining Real Madrid. Now, the Parisian club must manage the succession of Kylian Mbappé, which is not expected to be as straightforward as after the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar, according to Lizarazu. “It could be tricky,” he notes.

“While I think the departures of Neymar and Lionel Messi freed up Vitinha because it affected the heart of the game, the situation upfront is different. In my opinion, Kylian, who is more about finishing plays, does not inhibit other attackers. However, transitioning abruptly from a ‘bling-bling’ project with three major stars to another where the only star is the coach could prove delicate for other reasons…” says the 1998 World Cup winner in an interview with L’ÉQUIPE, before adding that Kylian Mbappé deserves a proper tribute.

“Mbappé deserves to be honored respectfully,” he states. “When he says that he has always tried to give the best version of himself during his seven seasons at PSG, it’s true. He is the club’s all-time leading scorer (255 goals, including 43 this season, his record) and one of the best players—I don’t want to compare him with others (Ibrahimovic, Susic, Rai, Weah…) because the contexts are too different. From both sides, there should be class. He should have at least mentioned his president,” adds Bixente Lizarazu.
