Mesut Özil, the former attacking midfielder of Real Madrid, takes a dig at Barça just days before the Clasico between his former club and the Catalan team.
The two teams are set to play a highly anticipated match on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at the Santiago Bernabeu.
This will be for the 32nd round of La Liga and also the return match of the season in the championship.
In the first leg, the Merengues emerged victorious away with a score of two goals to one, courtesy of a brace from Jude Bellingham. That was on October 28, 2023.
On Sunday, the Barcelona players will have the opportunity to get their revenge on Carlo Ancelotti’s team. This would bring them within 5 points of their opponent with 6 rounds remaining in the championship.
Even though fans are eagerly awaiting this summit clash between the two greatest clubs in Spanish history, Mesut Özil believes that Barça has lowered the level of the Clasico. According to the former German international, the duel is not as high in terms of quality as it was a few years ago.
The former Arsenal player explains that this is because the Barça team no longer boasts a squad as strong as before.
Mesut Özil believes that Real Madrid has always managed to have a competitive team, unlike Barça, which is facing difficulties.
“I think the Clasico has dropped in level, and it’s a shame. But it’s not Real Madrid’s fault, as it is undoubtedly one of the best teams in the world. The problem lies with Barça, which has lost its edge,” said the former player.
