Mathias Pogba’s hearing yesterday in the trial involving his brother Paul was marked by high tension.
This Friday, the Pogba trial continued at the Paris Criminal Court. Five of the six defendants have already been heard, but Mathias Pogba, Paul’s elder brother, has yet to speak. Despite the president’s wish to hear his testimony, the hearing was postponed.
According to Ouest France, at around 9.10pm, after a day of interminable debates, the president announced her intention to question Mathias, triggering strong opposition in the room. Mathias’ lawyer, Maître Mbeko Tabula, strongly protested, saying: “How can anyone, in a country of human rights, question a person in such conditions? He’s risking his freedom, his life is at stake. This is not China. Mathias himself, who has remained silent since the start of the proceedings, said he was not in a position to respond that day.
Scheduling constraints complicate the situation
Even Paul Pogba’s lawyer, Carine Piccio, argued for a suspension. After deliberation, the president decided to postpone the hearing until Tuesday December 3 at 9:30 am, the date corresponding to the last day initially scheduled for the trial. However, this postponement created a major difficulty: a single day might not be enough to bring the proceedings to a close. Faced with this constraint, the president raised the possibility of extending the trial to Wednesday, Thursday or even the following week.
