Since Qatar’s acquisition of PSG in 2011, the ultimate goal has been to secure the second Champions League title in French football history.
However, the Parisian club has faced successive disappointments in Europe in recent years, and it appears they have even scaled back their pursuit of the Champions League.
In an interview last March with RMC Sport, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi seemed to half-heartedly confess that PSG had lowered its lofty ambitions in the Champions League: “The players want to win every match. But we also need to be realistic. Most of the players are new (…) We are building a new team, so it’s not easy,” said the PSG president. Qatar has spared no expense at PSG.
This rhetoric contrasts sharply with the grand ambitions and massive financial investment Qatar has made over the years, recruiting top stars to PSG (such as Ibrahimovic, Cavani, Neymar, Mbappé, Messi) in an attempt to win the Champions League.

Wednesday night, speaking on the After Foot show on RMC Sport, Daniel Riolo confirmed this sudden decline in PSG’s European ambitions: “PSG’s objective today, I think, is for the business to thrive, for the cash to flow in. In fact, one should almost take Nasser’s words literally. PSG no longer has the ambition to win the Champions League, it’s over,” assessed the editorialist. That’s clear now…
