Winner of the Champions Trophy, leader of Ligue 1, qualified for the Coupe de France final, and now in the semi-finals of the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain could achieve a historic quadruple in Luis Enrique’s first season at the club’s helm. Present at a press conference, the Spanish coach shared some necessary ingredients for such an outcome.
Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain seems unstoppable. With their backs against the wall after a defeat at the Parc des Princes, the capital club eventually found the mental resources needed to turn the tables against FC Barcelona last Tuesday at Montjuïc.
A historic comeback (6-4 on aggregate) allowed the Parisians to reach the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, who eliminated Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals. With his team still competing on all three fronts, Luis Enrique appeared at the press conference, smiling, before facing Olympique Lyonnais in the 30th round of Ligue 1. It was an opportunity for the Spaniard to express the club’s ambitions before the final sprint.
“As we enter the last month and a half of competition, we are gradually achieving our objectives, and that’s why we work. The title? There’s no rush; we want to win Ligue 1, and the goal is just to remain competitive wherever we are involved. It doesn’t matter when we win the championship,” assured the former Spain national team coach. When asked about squad management, the PSG boss highlighted the constant progression of his collective before sharing what he believes is the key to a potentially historic end to the season.
Luis Enrique is aiming for the quadruple!
“To be able to compete in every match, you need a large squad, a minimum of 23 players, and that’s what we have here. Throughout the season, every player has been important. They all need to be ready to help the team, maybe just to take a penalty. I like to see the attitude of my players in training.” True to his principles, Luis Enrique reiterated his intention to rely on all available strengths. An admitted philosophy that now allows him to aspire to a resounding quadruple. “I believe that on the day of my presentation, we spoke very clearly about wanting to compete for all trophies, and we are still in the running. We are achieving it; now we need to see how we finish, but we have the possibility to win everything, so stay tuned.”
Despite his ambitions, the former Barça coach emphasized the importance of perfect emotional management of events. When asked about a possible final against Real Madrid at Wembley on June 1st, he called for vigilance. “We’ll have to eliminate Borussia Dortmund, who were in the group of death as you remember. The semi-final will be exciting and very difficult.” A discourse as measured as it is ambitious before facing “the best team of the last 10 matchdays.” Facing Lyon this Sunday (9 pm), PSG will have the opportunity to take another step in defending their title. Regardless, the end of the season promises to be thrilling in the City of Light.
