Once close to Neymar during their years together at PSG, Kylian Mbappé eventually parted ways on bad terms with his former Brazilian teammate, who left Parc des Princes in 2023. Yet, on Sunday, Mbappé paid an unexpectedly heartfelt tribute to Neymar.
Signed by PSG in the summer of 2017, just weeks after Neymar’s record-breaking €222 million transfer, Kylian Mbappé spent six years alongside the Brazilian forward in Paris. The two initially displayed a clear bond, but over time, tensions arose, leading to Neymar’s departure from PSG a year ago amidst a strained relationship with Mbappé.
In an interview with Téléfoot on Sunday, the captain of the French national team paid a surprising tribute to Neymar, the former PSG number 10: “I played, for example, with Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Buffon, Lionel Messi, and even Neymar. These players were truly leaders,” Mbappé stated.
Mbappé, now with Real Madrid, places Neymar among the greatest leaders he has played with, alongside former stars of the French team like Paul Pogba and Hugo Lloris: “There was also Paul Pogba, who was a leader just before in the French team, and also Hugo Lloris. Today, I am on this mission, and I think I am ready for it,” Mbappé continued.
