For two seasons (2021-2023), Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi coexisted for better or for worse at PSG. Last summer, the Parisian leaders decided to part ways with the Brazilian and the Argentine, and are preparing to lose the Frenchman. Club legend Bernard Lama approves of these drastic changes in Paris.
Since 2011, with the arrival of the investment fund QSI at the helm of the club, PSG has been relentlessly pursuing its ultimate dream: the Champions League. To achieve this, the French club has transformed into a star hunter. The recent seasons have been marked by the presence in the capital of a stellar trio composed of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi. PSG embarked on a revolution with its stars.
However, amidst ego wars, recurring injuries, and sometimes cavalier attitudes, this attacking trio clearly did not have the expected impact. Two seasons in a row, PSG was eliminated in the Champions League Round of 16. Last summer, Paris began its reconstruction with the non-renewal of Lionel Messi’s contract and the sale of Neymar for €90M. At the end of the 2023-2024 season, the Parisian club will also lose Kylian Mbappé, who confirmed his departure in February.
“It was very complicated and it muddled the message.”
PSG legend Bernard Lama believes that these two years with the trio of stars in attack were very complicated: “Clearly. Before, there was Messi, Neymar, Mbappé, it was very complicated and it muddled the message. Now, there is a common goal, with a charismatic leader and leaders in all lines. The squad is more complete and more stable,” he told Le Parisien.
