Kylian Mbappé is demanding €100 million from PSG after his free departure. However, the Parisian club is defending itself, arguing that Mbappé had given his word to protect the club.
On Friday evening, while Kylian Mbappé was calmly on the bench during the match between France and the Netherlands, the news broke in the French press. The new Real Madrid forward, who had fallen out with PSG’s management for refusing to extend his contract, is seeking €100 million from PSG.
The Parisian club decided not to pay Mbappé’s final salaries and several bonuses, claiming he did not fulfill his promises. In response, Mbappé’s lawyers have formally demanded payment from PSG and are not backing down in this dispute. Negotiations between the two sides have been ongoing for several weeks.
On Saturday, shortly after the article was published, the Spanish daily Marca revealed additional details. While Mbappé continues to claim what he believes he is owed, PSG maintains that they are within their rights. The French champions argue that Mbappé had agreed not to leave for free, a commitment he publicly confirmed last summer in the mixed zone.
PSG cites a letter sent by Mbappé to the club in the summer of 2023 expressing his intention to leave for free in 2024 but with a desire to protect the club. PSG withheld two months’ salary pending further agreement after a gentleman’s agreement between Nasser al-Khelaïfi and Mbappé. The outcome of this dispute hinges on the legal validity of this verbal agreement in court. PSG may even use statements from witnesses present at the meeting, including Luis Campos and Luis Enrique, to support their case.
Marca suggests that a resolution between the parties is likely, noting that the €100 million figure is far from reality. Mbappé earns €75 million gross annually, and even with bonuses, PSG owes only two months’ salary, making the €100 million claim implausible. Despite the initial legal threats, the situation may be resolved without court intervention.
