In response to an Instagram post where Antonio Rüdiger, the German and Real Madrid defender, was seen in a prayer posture for Ramadan, Julian Reichelt, former editor-in-chief of BILD, made comments suggesting an Islamist affiliation by comparing Rüdiger’s gesture to a symbol of the Islamic State. In reaction, Rüdiger filed a defamation complaint, while the German Football Federation (DFB) reported the incident to the authorities. Rüdiger also filed lawsuits against Reichelt for insult, defamation, and incitement to hatred, labeling Reichelt’s comments as hate speech. Rüdiger’s lawyers also warned BILD against spreading harmful remarks about their client. Despite the legal actions taken, Reichelt persisted in his statements.
