Rodrygo, the Real Madrid player, has been making headlines in the days leading up to the Champions League final.
His remarks have sparked controversy, prompting him to intervene to mitigate the emerging “controversy,” which nevertheless seems likely to persist. The Brazilian granted two interviews, one to DAZN in Spain and another to Placar TV for a Brazilian media outlet.
In both instances, the Real Madrid player suggests that a departure from the Spanish capital cannot be ruled out if his role within the team were to diminish. With the arrivals of Mbappé and Endrick this summer, increasing competition looms for the next season, giving particular weight to Rodrygo’s statements.
“When asked if I want to play my whole life at Real? Yes, well, anything can happen. I have a contract here, but the years spent here have been a pleasure for me,” the Brazilian told DAZN, before journalist Sandra Diaz cautioned him not to make Madridistas nervous. “No, no, calm down. As I said, I always want to play for this club but we’ll see…” he replied.
Following the buzz generated by these declarations on social media, Rodrygo and his entourage sought to temper the situation. “Today, there was a very embarrassing situation because one of my interviews was completely taken out of context. To be very direct, I am VERY happy at Real Madrid, I live a dream every day, and leaving my club has never crossed my mind! Now let’s continue our story. Onward to the 15th. Hala Madrid y Nada más!” tweeted the Madrid player in the evening. However, despite the player’s denial, similar sentiments emerged in the second interview he gave to Placar TV, somewhat undermining the argument of misinterpretation. “Of course, I want to continue here for many years; I want to be here, help, and be important for the team,” he initially responded before leaving possibilities open.
“And when I see that I am no longer as important, the time will come to look for another club, but I don’t think that’s the case right now, and I’m not thinking about it. I have always dreamed of playing here; Real Madrid has always been my favorite club, I’m living a dream, I’ve already won everything, and as long as I am important, I want to continue here,” he continued.
And if he were to leave, where could he go? “Everyone already knows, no need to answer… The Premier League is a league that everyone loves to watch. I won’t close any doors, but everyone knows that my dream is always to play for Real Madrid, even though anything is possible. My goal is to continue here,” he concluded.
While the Brazilian insists repeatedly on his desire to stay at Real Madrid, these statements nonetheless seem like a message to the club and his coach ahead of the next season. It is already known that satisfying everyone next season will be a very complex task for Carlo Ancelotti, but he may be the only one capable of doing so.
