In a recent segment of the “Rothen s’enflamme” show on RMC, host Jérôme Rothen sharply criticized the performance of Algerian international player Saïd Benrahma during the match against Paris Saint-Germain.
Rothen pointed out that including Benrahma and Rayan Cherki in the starting eleven for Olympique Lyonnais against such a fast-paced team as PSG was a serious tactical error on the part of coach Pierre Sage. “Pierre Sage made a serious and unforgivable mistake… It’s not logical to field both Saïd Benrahma and Rayan Cherki against a team as quick as Paris Saint-Germain,” he stated.
Rothen argued that Benrahma and Cherki lacked concentration when they didn’t have the ball and didn’t contribute enough defensively, which PSG exploited to score four goals in a single half. He also mentioned that the absence of Mbappé and Dembélé limited the damage for Lyon, but the situation could have been much worse if those players had been on the field.
“Benrahma and Cherki do nothing when they don’t have the ball, and both lack the necessary concentration to fulfill their tactical roles and help the defense, which PSG exploited by scoring four goals in a single half. Fortunately for Lyon, Mbappé and Dembélé didn’t play, otherwise they would have exploited those spaces even more, and the result would have been heavier,” he emphasized.
Benrahma, who joined Lyon on loan from West Ham United during the last winter transfer window, has only scored one goal and provided two assists in 11 matches since his arrival, accumulating 756 minutes of playing time.
