Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger spoke at a press conference ahead of the Germany match.

This Thursday evening, Antonio Rudiger will be on the pitch, like many of his teammates, for the Nations League quarter-finals. The German also spoke at a press conference on Wednesday and discussed his future, as the 32-year-old remains indispensable to Carlo Ancelotti.

This season, the Madrid defender has made no fewer than 41 appearances in all competitions and is coming off an exceptional year with Madrid, during which he played at the best level of his career and won La Liga and the Champions League.

However, Rudiger has just turned 32 and his contract expires in 2026. We know the Madrid club’s policy regarding its thirty-year-old players (year-by-year extensions) and we also know that Saudi Arabia has already made an interest in the German, even though, during the match against Italy, an Italian colleague asked him if he could imagine returning to Serie A, having played for AS Roma from 2015 to 2017.

“Italy was a very important country for me, a great league to learn as a defender. I love the country in general and I really enjoyed my time there. The food, the pizzas, the pasta… Then there are big teams like Juventus, Napoli, Roma, and the Milan teams,” he admitted.

“But to be honest, I’m very, very happy where I am today. I’m not thinking about leaving anytime soon,” he announced. These statements leave little doubt about his short-term future, even if, as he also pointed out, “you never know what can happen in football.”
