Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, responded to Kylian Mbappé’s remarks suggesting that the UEFA Euro is tougher than the World Cup and, by extension, the Copa America.

“The best competition is where the best teams are,” Scaloni retorted.

“In South America, we don’t have the best European players, and they don’t have the best from our continent either,” he added.

Scaloni also emphasized that “just because it’s Mbappé doesn’t mean he holds the truth. Modrić said the opposite and nobody talks about it. These are respectable opinions.”

The Argentine coach then highlighted the quality of South American football: “Colombia is also a football power. Ecuador performs well, as does Paraguay, which troubles everyone. Additionally, Chile achieves good results in the World Cup. I would never dare to say these teams aren’t among the best.”

A comparison between the Euro and Copa America is unnecessary. Both tournaments have expanded their formats to include more teams, aiming to provide richer spectacles.

Since 2016, the Euro has been played with 24 teams, while the Copa America integrated the top six CONCACAF nations in 2016, totaling 16 teams.

These changes aim to make both competitions more representative of global football and more competitive. The comparison between the Euro and Copa America has been a debated topic for years.

Each competition has its strengths and weaknesses, so objectively determining which is tougher is challenging.

What is certain is that both tournaments boast talent and offer high-level football matches.
