It didn’t take long for Real Madrid’s iconic captain to make waves in Mexico.
After a season spent at home in Sevilla and long months waiting for an interesting opportunity in Europe (Real Madrid, in particular, who never called him up), Sergio Ramos decided to continue his career across the Atlantic, namely in Mexico.
The least we can say is that the former Madrid player didn’t arrive there for a quiet end to his career, as we find the same Sergio Ramos as always: the one who has the drive, scores goals, and… gets cards!
After five matches in the Rayados colors, the number 93 (a reference to the goal that marked La Décima) has already scored three goals and also opened his red card tally, holding the record for red cards in both Madrid and Spain.
Uncompromising with one of his fans
Indeed, the former Real Madrid player was sent off in the 92nd minute of his team’s 3-1 win over Pumas, but he could have been sent off sooner, as the referee had forgiven him for elbowing Bennevendo in the 20th minute. The late kick, however, didn’t go through.
On his social media, Sergio Ramos joked about the matter. “Important victory against a tough opponent on a difficult pitch. Now is the time to rest and think about the next match. PS: It was clear I wasn’t going to leave this championship without a red card,” he wrote.
In Mexico, however, the Andalusian’s behavior is less laughable. “We expect a foreigner to be an example, a good guy. It seems to me that Ramos should have been sent off after 20 minutes. Beyond that, no matter what his name is, he must be exemplary. If he were Mexican, he would definitely have been sent off in the 20th minute and not the 90th. That’s what bothers me,” the Pumas UNAM coach fumed after the match.
“Yesterday, Bennevendo said it would be an honor for him to play against Sergio Ramos. Today, he elbowed him. That doesn’t go down well. We have to respect and take care of our football. Ramos elbowed a boy who said the day before that he was his idol,” charged Efrain Juarez, the opposing coach.
