When it comes to legendary footballers, few come close to the level, legacy and talent of Ukrainian legend Andriy Shevchenko.
The former AC Milan goal machine tore apart defences in Italy and across Europe, leading his team to Champions League glory in 2003 and winning a well-deserved Ballon d’Or the following year.
Shevchenko was finally involved in the never-ending debate surrounding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
He gave his opinion on who the best player of all time is, and didn’t hesitate when asked.
“Is Messi the best in history? For me, yes. It’s a different era to Pele and Maradona, but Messi is all that… He’s the symbol of Argentina.
He’s a legend, one of the best of all time. We compare him to Maradona and Pele. A player like him deserves to win the World Cup.
Indeed, it’s hard to find a player who dribbles and scores like Messi,” said the Ukrainian.
“He’s the perfect prototype of the 21st century striker. You can’t even pin him down to one position.
He’s everywhere, making defenders look clumsy,” added Andriy Shevchenko.
The debate is far from over and many will choose Ronaldo, despite La Pulga’s superior performances, but for Shevchenko, Messi is number one.
