The Spanish Football Federation unveiled on Monday the list of 29 players selected by Luis de la Fuente to represent Spain at Euro 2024 in Germany. The selection includes several surprises, notably the absences of Marco Asensio and Isco.

It’s official, Spain has revealed in Madrid on Monday a list of 29 players for Euro 2024, which will take place this summer in Germany. De la Fuente has made some strong choices for his team’s composition.

Present during the announcement of the list, former Spanish international Fernando Torres, a double European champion in 2008 and 2012, praised the work done by the coach. For him, La Roja is a team of very high level, with a perfect mix of experience and youth. Despite the absence of some key players, he believes that Spain will have a very good chance of winning this European title.

Indeed, while players like Marco Asensio, Isco, Lucas Vazquez, or Dani Ceballos are missing, La Roja still has a squad of great quality. De la Fuente has relied on the usual leaders while also trusting promising young talents like Curbasi, Lamine Yamal, and Nico Williams.

The bold choice to leave out Asensio

The most noticeable absence is undoubtedly that of Marco Asensio. Despite being considered one of the best Spanish players in recent years, the PSG forward was not selected by the coach. Suffering from an injury at the start of the season, Asensio has not managed to establish himself regularly at his club this year. Despite his undeniable talent, De la Fuente chose to do without his services for this competition.

It’s a risky gamble, as Asensio is capable of making the difference in a match. But the coach preferred to rely on players in good form, even if it meant depriving himself of such a talented player.

Experience and youth at the heart of La Roja

To compensate for these absences, De la Fuente has chosen to rely on a mix of experienced players and up-and-coming young talents. Among the key players are Alvaro Morata, Dani Carvajal and Nacho. But the coach has also put his faith in younger players, such as Pedri, Cubarsí, Grimaldo, Fermin, Olmo, Ferran, Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal and Ayoze. These are players who have already proved their worth with the national team and who will bring their freshness and dynamism to the team.

This combination of experience and youth should enable Spain to field a solid, well-balanced team for this continental competition. Before flying out to Germany, La Roja will have the opportunity to fine-tune their preparations. After a friendly against Andorra on 2 June, the players will gather in Las Rozas for a final day together. This will be the time for Luis de la Fuente to make his final choices and finalise his list of 26 players who will take part in the competition. In accordance with UEFA’s new rules, only goalkeepers may be replaced after this date in the event of injury.

On 7 June, the Spanish team will leave their training centre and move to their base camp in Germany. This is the final stage before the start of the UEFA EURO, where La Roja will be aiming to reclaim the European title, 12 years after their last triumph. With a top-quality squad and an experienced coaching staff, Spain are the logical favourites for the title. De la Fuente’s team will be keen to shine and write a new page in the history of Spanish football.
