The results of a major survey conducted by the daily newspaper AS have shed light on Real Madrid fans’ wishes for the upcoming transfer window.
Real Madrid isn’t used to making major changes when the transfer window opens. Florentino Perez is more inclined to make big one-off signings (Bellingham, Mbappé) with a few minor tweaks. In short, the face of the Real Madrid squad changes little, if any, each summer.
However, the setbacks of recent seasons caused by numerous injuries and significant departures (Kroos, Benzema) have led Madrid fans to believe that this time, they’ll have to get active in the transfer window. Many already believed that signing a defender was essential last January, but the Madrid management has not deviated from its policy. Ancelotti could easily sum up this policy in one sentence: “Find out how to win with what you have.”
Carlo Ancelotti knows that his future depends heavily on his results and the titles he wins. The transfer window will also undoubtedly be based on the season’s results. Clearly, if Real Madrid wins La Liga and the Champions League, we shouldn’t expect Perez to open his checkbook. The White House has always operated on reaction, and it must be said that it has often served him well.
Fans demand full-backs
However, voters in the AS poll believe that whatever happens, recruits will be necessary this time. Not just at right-back, although this is undoubtedly the most concerning position, as it received 28% of the 30,000 votes to the following question: “Which positions would you strengthen at Real Madrid for next season?”
The right-back position is a logical concern: Carvajal will be returning after a very serious injury and at the age of 33. The signing of Alexander-Arnold seems a given and will bring depth to this position, but it is also quite possible that this will be Lucas Vazquez’s last season in Madrid.
Defensive fullbacks appear to be the main concern, as the second most popular position is left-back, with 23% of the vote. This position is already covered by Ferland Mendy and Fran García, but Madridistas don’t seem convinced by this duo.
As for the third most requested reinforcement by fans, but not far behind left-back, the need for a midfielder appears to be the most sought-after, with 22% of the vote. The option of signing a central defender is also supported (18%), but the emergence of Raúl Asencio has reassured many.
The other options are insignificant: striker (3%), right winger (1%), left winger (1%), playmaker (1%)… The goalkeeper position is logically the one that needs to be renewed the least, since less than 1% of voters believe that Real Madrid should sign a new goalkeeper. With Courtois and Lunin, it’s quite logical.
