Former sports director of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Albert Luque decided to give a long interview to AS, published this Friday.

And during this interview, the man who played as a striker between 1997 and 2011 looked back on several episodes that marked his mandate. The former Spanish international (17 caps, 2 goals) notably made an incredible revelation: he wanted to install Zinedine Zidane at the head of the national team.

Although he did not specify when this idea came to him, Albert Luque nevertheless explained that he kept this project to himself, and had not spoken about it to the former president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, or to the main person concerned: “I had Zidane in mind, but Rubiales did not even know it. He managed a locker room with people who were not easy. But I was never able to talk to Zidane about it, just as I never doubted De la Fuente. Guardiola? If Zidane is complicated, imagine Guardiola. I don’t think he would be the Spanish national coach, given all the statements he has made on political issues.” On the other side of the Pyrenees, many would have been happy to see ZZ arrive as coach of the Spanish national team.
