Some players in the current squad are on the verge of becoming the most decorated in Real Madrid’s history. Gento and his 6 European Cup victories are within reach for players like Modric and Nacho, for example.
The Madrid club has been experiencing a prosperous and successful period in terms of titles for about a decade. If Real Madrid wins the 15th European Cup this Saturday at Wembley, they will equal the streak of six European Cups won in 11 seasons by Di Stéfano’s Madrid (five in a row between 1956 and 1960) and the Ye-yé era Real Madrid (1966) between 1956 and 1966.
A victory tonight would etch several players into the history of the Madrid club and world football. Nacho and Modric could become the most decorated players in the club’s history, with 26 titles each. Furthermore, these two players, along with Kroos (one with Bayern) and Carvajal, will equal Paco Gento’s six European Cups as the most decorated players in the history of the competition.
For over half a century, Paco Gento dominated the list of the most decorated players in the club’s history. When he passed away on January 18, 2022, he still held that honor. With 24 titles, including 12 league championships, 6 European Cups, 2 Copa del Reys, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 2 Latin Cups, and 1 Small World Cup, he remained the fifth most decorated player, tied with Carvajal, who could surpass him at Wembley tonight.
Gento’s record stood until a few months ago, until the double at the end of the 2021-2022 season. Marcelo, then captain, matched it with the Liga and surpassed it with the 14th UCL. The Brazilian left Madrid with 25 titles to his name. The same number Benzema reached last season, and Nacho and Modric achieved a few weeks ago with the conquest of La Liga.
As a sign of the second golden age of Real Madrid, five of the current team’s players and three others who participated in this cycle of success are among the top ten most decorated players in the club’s history.
Leading the list are Marcelo, Benzema, Nacho, and Modric, with 25 titles each (including 5 Champions Leagues each). The fifth spot is shared by Gento (6 European Cups) and Carvajal (5), with 24 titles. They are followed, with 22 titles, by Ramos, Kroos, and Sanchís. Lucas Vázquez, with 20 trophies, rounds out the top 10.
