Real Madrid, like other top European clubs, is closely monitoring Euro 2024 with great interest. The Madrid side is keen on bolstering their defense following Nacho’s departure, and their sights are set on Italy, specifically on Riccardo Calafiori.

Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori, who has impressed with the Italian national team, could have numerous options for his future club, with increasing interest from Real Madrid according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport.

He has been one of the revelations of Euro 2024, shining after a successful season with surprise package Bologna in Italy. Among the new faces introduced by Luciano Spalletti at the start of Euro 2024, Calafiori has stood out notably. The Bologna defender has taken charge alongside Alessandro Bastoni in Italy’s defense, delivering solid performances, notably against Albania (2-1).

Despite his young age, Calafiori has played with the assurance of a veteran, showcasing the qualities that have already established him as one of Serie A’s top performers in his position.

Bold, technically adept, and forward-thinking, Calafiori has proven valuable in transitions with precise distribution while remaining solid defensively. His calm decision-making, flawless transitions, and effective interventions have earned him widespread praise. Some have even dared to compare him to Paolo Maldini. According to recent reports from Italy, clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham have also shown interest in the 22-year-old central defender.

Currently contracted to Bologna until June 2027, Calafiori is valued at €50 million. Juventus has also expressed interest but may reconsider due to the high asking price. Real Madrid faces stiff competition, with Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly undeterred by the fee. Calafiori’s impressive season stats include two goals and six assists in 40 appearances across all competitions. His performances have put him in the spotlight internationally, with clubs across Europe now aware of his talent.

As former Bologna coach Thiago Motta heads to Juventus, there’s speculation Calafiori could follow. However, with Real Madrid in the mix, the transfer dynamics could change significantly. Juventus had seemed favorites, but Calafiori’s standout displays have altered the landscape, now pegging his transfer fee around €40 million.

With Juventus having previously paid €50 million for Bremer two years ago, Bologna must also consider a 40% sell-on clause owed to Calafiori’s former club, FC Basel. Bologna’s director Claudio Fenucci remains intent on retaining the 22-year-old Italian international, but if Real Madrid enters the race, other clubs could also vie for Calafiori’s signature. Tottenham has already shown interest, and Arsenal could make a move, making Calafiori a major attraction in this summer’s transfer window.
