UEFA has announced the opening of an investigation into several Real Madrid players following the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

A little over two weeks ago, the two clubs from the Spanish capital faced off for a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. A heated duel at the Metropolitano was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.

Ancelotti’s men emerged victorious, and celebrated their hard-earned qualification against the Colchoneros. This match sparked numerous controversies, the main one being Julian Alvarez’s disallowed penalty.

For Atletico Madrid, the pill was hard to swallow, as the club’s management not only constantly expressed their disagreement with their striker’s disallowed shot, but also believed that several Real Madrid players had crossed the line during their victory celebrations.

A few days after the match, Atletico Madrid submitted videos to UEFA showing certain actions by the Whites that warranted punishment. For example, they showed Rüdiger making a throat-slitting gesture while addressing the stands at the Metropolitano stadium.

This denunciation clearly bore fruit, as the European governing body decided to open an investigation into four Real Madrid players: Rüdiger, Ceballos, Vinicius Junior, and Kylian Mbappé.

UEFA statement

“A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent behavior by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández, and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 match between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid on 12 March 2025.”
