Liverpool have chosen three central defenders to replace Virgil van Dijk if the veteran leaves the club at the end of his contract this summer.
Liverpool is looking for central defenders this summer, and three players in particular are among their targets, according to BILD journalist Christian Falk. Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck is touted as one of the defenders who could succeed Van Dijk, alongside Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Greek international Konstantinos Koulierakis, currently at Wolfsburg, is the third “cheaper” option being considered, valued by BILD at €15 million.
Although Liverpool are looking to sign a defender this summer, the size of their investment could depend on whether they can agree a new contract with Van Dijk. The future of Ibrahima Konaté, who is entering the final year of his contract and is coveted by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, could also play a significant role.
Van Dijk Courted by PSG
Van Dijk opened up about his future this week, admitting he’s unsure whether he’ll stay at Liverpool. This statement follows his comments after Liverpool’s Champions League elimination against Paris Saint-Germain, where he revealed he had “no idea” about his plans for the rest of the season.
“If there’s any news, you’ll know. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are discussions behind the scenes, but that’s it. Right now, I don’t even know what’s going to happen next year. If anyone says they know, they’re lying to you,” Van Dijk said. “I have no idea,” he added. “I still have no idea right now. Honestly.” »
Liverpool will be determined not to let their captain’s future take precedence over a weekend when they face Newcastle at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, Arne Slot’s first chance at a title as manager. The Reds will then seek to conclude their Premier League title quest before resolving the contract issues of their star players, with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also expiring this summer.
