The Turkish Football Federation issued a statement to address concerns arising from a video showing coach Vincenzo Montella instructing Arda Güler to train separately. This occurred ahead of Turkey’s crucial Euro 2024 match against the Czech Republic amidst a tense atmosphere.
During Sunday’s open training session, Montella was seen assigning bibs to certain players and then directing the Real Madrid midfielder to train away from the group. This moment, captured on video and widely shared, led to accusations that Montella had shown disrespect to the young Turkish talent. In response, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) clarified that Güler was asked to undertake individual training due to a groin injury, ensuring optimal preparation for the upcoming match.
Despite starting as a substitute in the match against Portugal (which Turkey lost 3-0), Güler had earlier been a pivotal figure, scoring a stunning curled strike in Turkey’s 3-1 victory over Georgia. His interaction with Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal game also drew attention when Güler attempted to greet Ronaldo, who inadvertently passed by without acknowledging him.
Portugal’s convincing win over Turkey secured their place in the round of 16, leaving Güler disappointed at the outcome. His performances continue to attract interest and scrutiny as Turkey aims to progress further in the tournament.
