Toni Kroos, the legendary midfielder of Real Madrid, has decided to retire from professional football after Euro 2024 in Germany.
Currently 34 years old, the German surprised many by announcing on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, his intention to retire exactly two months from now.
While rumors suggested that the German star would extend his contract for another year with Real Madrid, the former Bayern Munich player decided otherwise.
It has been a few years since he indicated that the Madrid club would be his last in football.
Now it’s done! The German will play the Champions League final on June 1, 2024, against Borussia Dortmund and will take the opportunity to bid farewell to the Real Madrid fans present at Wembley Stadium.
Afterwards, he will focus on Euro 2024 and will permanently retire from professional football as soon as Germany exits the tournament. Since the German player announced his decision via social media, tributes from many have poured in to salute the player he has been.

Xabi Alonso, the coach of Bayer Leverkusen, also commented on Toni Kroos’ choice, stating that the player made a great decision by retiring while still at the top.
“It’s a good decision, it leaves him at the peak and Germany will be able to enjoy him at the EURO. He’s an extraordinary player, an icon, an example, he has marked a generation,” said the Spaniard.
