2026 World Cup: Shock after the death of a 22-year-old international player

Fatjon Bunjaku, a Kosovo U21 international, passed away this Sunday, June 7, following a car accident.

At just 22 years old, he was seen as one of the bright hopes of Kosovo football. The forward, who primarily played as a right winger, had stints in Croatia and Kosovo before spending his first season in Albania with AF Elbasani.

With his former club, KF Malisheva, he participated in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. The team suffered a heavy defeat against Vikingur Reykjavik, with an aggregate score of 9-0.

The accident reportedly occurred on the M2 highway, near the city of Vushtrri, just a few kilometers from his hometown of Samadrexhë.

In a statement on its official website, the Kosovo Football Federation expressed its sorrow, calling this loss an “immense and irreplaceable loss.”

The statement also noted that the player was “much more than a talented footballer. He was an educated and passionate young man, driven by big dreams, who earned the respect of everyone who had the chance to know and work with him through his hard work, personality, and love for football.”

On social media, many messages of support have been sent to his family and loved ones. Several Kosovo clubs have also expressed their condolences.
