After winning the 2024 Copa America, Argentine players find themselves at the center of a major scandal.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced its intention to appeal to FIFA following the circulation of a video on social media showing Argentine players singing a racist chant targeting players from the French team.
This was reported by AFP on their X account on July 16, 2024.
On July 15, 2024, during celebrations of Argentina’s victory in the Copa America, players including midfielder Enzo Fernandez were filmed singing a racist chant aimed at French players of African descent, notably Kylian Mbappé.
The chant included insulting and mocking lyrics referencing the origins of the French squad players. This racist chant, previously sung by Argentine fans in November 2022 during the World Cup, is not an isolated incident.
Simultaneously, Euro 2024 was underway. France was eliminated in the semi-finals by Spain, who eventually won the tournament.
Argentine players face significant sanctions if FIFA rules in favor of the FFF.
Despite the controversy, hundreds of Argentine supporters welcomed their team in Buenos Aires on Monday night, celebrating their victory with drum beats.
Much of the team, including captain Lionel Messi, remained in the United States.
