Uruguay defeated Brazil on penalties earlier this morning, with Suarez watching from the bench but actively celebrating with teammates and speaking to the media post-match.

Before kickoff, Pereira, formerly of Manchester United and now with Fulham, had stated that Brazil was the favorite due to having superior players. Suarez, in response, defended Uruguay’s talent, saying to reporters, “We have the best midfielders in the world, high-level players.

To speak about Uruguay, you need to have a bit more respect and know Uruguay’s history.” He continued, “Before saying which players should be part of the Brazilian national team, I must say that the person who made that comment was Giorgian De Arrascaeta’s backup at Flamengo, who is the best player in Brazilian football. So, imagine what that’s like for us to hear.”

Pereira later clarified his statement, emphasizing that he did not intend to disrespect Uruguay, but was expressing support for his team: “I simply said that I prefer that and I believe our players are better, so if they use that to their advantage, they can do whatever they want. But at no time did I disrespect Uruguay.”

Uruguay will now face Colombia in the Copa America semi-finals in a few days.
