PSG beat Metz 3-1 on Wednesday evening thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappé on his 25th birthday. Following Luis Enrique’s men’s victory, Daniel Riolo made some revelations about certain players.
PSG have not enjoyed the best of seasons since the arrival of Luis Enrique. The French club, who finished second in their Champions League group, were fortunate to fall to Real Sociedad in the Round of 16. Better still, things are not going too well in the league, despite their top spot.
PSG are creating plenty of chances thanks to their possession, but they are not scoring many goals. Kylian Mbappe is increasingly uninspiring despite often playing close to goal. But Daniel Riolo has tried to explain why.
The RMC SPORT journalist admitted in After Foot on Wednesday evening that Kylian Mbappe is not cut out to play at the point of attack. He comes to terms with the fact that the 2018 world champion has always shone on the left flank and on Wednesday night, it was again in that position that he managed to score a brace against FC Metz.
“For his career, he needs to stay up on the left because that’s where he’s shone, and it was in that position that he scored again tonight. You find a centre-forward, you scramble to put one in by trusting Ramos, you put in a false nine if you like, you have Dembélé on the right, Mbappé on the left and you scramble to find a 9. And another thing that shouldn’t change in this team is the presence of Vitinha (…) Everyone knows that the best midfield is Ugarte-Vitinha-Zaire Emery,” he said.
Riolo is clear: Gonçalo Ramos is broken at PSG
After a fairly disappointing campaign, Nasser al-Khelaïfi decided to replace Christophe Galtier with Luis Enrique. Then PSG made a fairly intelligent recruitment move after the departures of Messi, Sergio Ramos, Neymar and Verratti. The club has signed Marco Asensio, Gonçalo Ramos, Lucas Hernandez, Lee, Ugarte, Skrinia, Kolo Muani, Dembélé and Barcola.
However, Luis Enrique was quick to show his preference for a 100% French attacking trio with Mbappé, Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele. A combination of three attacking players whose main quality is speed, while the Catalan technician has available a profile like Gonçalo Ramos, a fairly promising surface striker from Benfica who put Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Speaking on his After Foot programme on Wednesday evening, Daniel Riolo said that the Portuguese international is completely broken at PSG, having arrived at the club to play one match after another, having had a more than respectable season with Benfica before his departure.
“We have broken Ramos, who is not confident, so there is no longer a 9 in this team. And nobody will change my mind about the fact that Kylian Mbappé is not a 9 and that he shouldn’t be,” explained the RMC Sport journalist.
PSG and Luis Enrique will need Gonçalo Ramos during the second half of the season, when the club will be eagerly awaited in the Champions League, for example. Nasser al-Khelaïfi’s club are aiming to win the Champions League, and with a coach who has already won the trophy with Barça, PSG believe they have a chance this season.
They have inherited Real Sociedad in the last 16 and Luis Enrique needs to put his faith in Gonçalo Ramos to give himself a chance. As Daniel Riolo said, Kylian Mbappé is better on the flank and if Luis Enrique shifts the Bondynois to the wing, he needs to put a real striker up front for his attacking team and inevitably, Gonçalo Ramos’ profile is the best suited.
