Following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal as head coach of Manchester United, Rúben Amorim will now lead the team through the end of the season. The Portuguese manager recently signed a three-year contract with the Red Devils.
As one chapter closes, another begins. Since ten Hag’s departure on October 28, Manchester United had been actively searching for his successor. The press speculated on several names, including Brentford’s Thomas Frank, the out-of-contract Xavi, and Eric Roy, the current Brest manager. Ultimately, Rúben Amorim was selected to take the helm at the club.
Manchester United’s management paid €10 million to trigger Rúben Amorim’s release clause. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach agreed to leave Sporting after negotiations between the two clubs. “Manchester United is pleased to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, pending the issuance of a work visa. He is contracted until June 2027, with an additional one-year option, and will join Manchester United on Monday, November 11, once he has fulfilled his current obligations,” the English club stated in a release today.
Ten Hag paid the price for poor results.
Last season’s underperformance had already put Ten Hag in a precarious position, as the team showed little progress. Despite new signings and his optimistic statements, fans had few reasons to celebrate, with many calling for his departure for several months. Ruud van Nistelrooy, also Dutch, has stepped in as interim coach until the arrival of a new head tactician. Having joined this summer as an assistant, the former MU striker—who managed PSV Eindhoven in 2022-2023 before Peter Bosz—will not have the opportunity to prove himself long-term, though he began his tenure with a 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester.
Amorim, on his part, departs from Sporting after an outstanding start to the season. His former team currently holds the top spot in the league, boasting a flawless record of 9 wins in 9 games, along with strong performances in the Champions League, with 2 wins in 3 matches. This track record has raised the hopes of Red Devils supporters, who eagerly anticipate a fresh start for Manchester United.
