Thomas Müller, former German international, shared his perspective on the criteria for identifying the best player in the world.

For the Bayern Munich forward, it’s as simple as noticing which player is used as a reference whenever a new, promising talent emerges. According to him, this is a clear indication of who dominates the game.

Pelé, Messi, or CR7... Thomas Müller sets the ultimate criterion to define the GOAT!

Müller points out that whenever a young prodigy comes onto the scene, they are immediately compared to a “new Messi.” This, in Müller’s view, illustrates the Argentine’s dominance in football, serving as the model young players aspire to emulate.

“If you want to know who the best in the world is, when a new talent appears, what do people say? A new Messi,” said Müller. “In reality, there’s only one Messi in the world. It seems like he was created solely to play football.”

The German forward also reflected on the memory of the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, where he witnessed the state Messi was in after Argentina’s heartbreaking defeat.

In that decisive match, “La Pulga” and his team lost to Germany, conceding a goal in extra time that sealed a 1-0 victory for the Germans. “During that final, after our win, I saw him devastated, and I thought to myself, ‘This player doesn’t deserve this, but that’s football,’” Müller recalled. “Messi is a true phenomenon, incomparable to any other player.”
