PSG won their 12th Super Cup, their tenth in the last eleven, with a 2-0 win over Toulouse. Kang-in Lee and Mbappé scored the goals.
Paris Saint-Germain took the first title of the season, the French Super Cup, with a 2-0 win over Toulouse to clinch their 12th title, their 10th in the last 11, establishing a tyranny in French football that no one has been able to challenge or even come close to. Luis Enrique’s side, who have won their tenth trophy as coach, the previous nine at Barcelona, in a match in which Kang-in Lee and Mbappé, with a masterpiece that makes him the top scorer in history (111) at the Parc des Princes, emerged as the real leaders of this team and tipped the balance in favour of the leader of the new French SuperChampions.
It took just two minutes for PSG to take the lead after the South Korean, who is off to the Asian Cup, tapped in a killer pass for Dembele, a nightmare for Suazo throughout. Carles Martinez Novell’s Toulouse, virtually subjugated to the Parisians’ dominance, found no antidote to Luis Enrique’s side’s fierce pressing, except for two chances from Suazo, who almost caught Donnarumma out, and another from Dallinga, who was denied by the Italian.
Yet to join the party was the usual Kylian Mbappé. Even in matches where he seems subdued, with little desire to participate, he is still one of the best players in the world, if not the best. On the brink of half-time, the Frenchman produced a Maradona-esque move, beating two opponents and beating Restes with breathtaking ease. Another year in which, barring a surprise, he will be the absolute leader of PSG.
The dictatorship of the capital club, which seems to have no end and certainly not in their own stadium, continued in a Super Cup that ended 2-0 in their favour. In the second half, which was virtually a stalemate, despite a number of timid chances from Toulouse, the highlight was the debut of Lucas Beraldo, fresh from Brazil, who made his first appearance for PSG after Skriniar’s injury. Donnarumma was again decisive, saving first from Donnum’s close-range volley, second from Dallinga’s stoppage-time header and then again, this time from Cissokho’s shot, to seal PSG’s 12th Super Cup, Luis Enrique’s first title in French football.
