Carlo Ancelotti is keeping a close eye on Kylian Mbappé, who is navigating a challenging period marked by a significant lack of confidence, particularly after missing two penalties in a Real Madrid shirt.
Since his arrival at Real Madrid, Mbappé has seemed unrecognizable. While his performances had already shown signs of decline during his final months at PSG, his prolific goal-scoring often masked the underlying issues. Now, his offensive efficiency has dipped (10 goals in 20 matches across all competitions), and his chemistry with attacking teammates like Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo, and Bellingham is still a work in progress.

Ancelotti on Mbappé: “His intensity has significantly improved”
While defending his star, Ancelotti acknowledges the difficulties. “Many don’t recognize their struggles when they fail. Mbappé is doing everything he can to bounce back quickly,” he said ahead of Real Madrid’s visit to Girona for the 16th round of La Liga on Saturday (9 PM). In Vinícius Jr.’s recent absence, Mbappé has played in a favored role, but regaining serenity remains a challenge.
The coach emphasized the Frenchman’s progress, especially physically. “In terms of intensity, he’s made great strides. Against Getafe, he covered 600 meters at high intensity, and against Athletic, 500 meters. That’s a good level,” Ancelotti noted, citing stats to underscore Mbappé’s commitment.
Support Without Overburdening
Ancelotti also highlighted the need to protect Mbappé physically and mentally. “We must support him, but that doesn’t mean he has to play every match,” he clarified. The Italian pointed out that adapting to his teammates, like Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo, and Bellingham, is still a work in progress: “It’s about continuity. It will come with time, as his teammates better understand his unique and special characteristics.”
Regarding penalties, Ancelotti remains optimistic. “It also depends on the moment and motivation. He needs to stay strong. Sooner or later, it will work out. What reassures me is that his intensity is improving,” he stated.
