In a difficult situation following the terrible injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Miliato, Real Madrid continue to panic. The latest reports suggest a lack of consensus between Florentino Perez and Carlo Ancelotti.
With the winter transfer window approaching, Real Madrid‘s management are questioning the need to strengthen their squad. According to Relevo, José Ángel Sánchez, the club’s director general, and Carlo Ancelotti, the Merengues coach, are calling for immediate reinforcements in order to strengthen the squad ahead of the season’s crucial fixtures. However, Florentino Pérez, Real Madrid’s emblematic president, remains hesitant and prefers to wait until the summer of 2025 before making any significant expenditure.
One of the potential targets being mooted is Aymeric Laporte, the Spanish central defender now with Al-Nassr. His versatility and experience would be invaluable assets in strengthening Madrid’s central defence. However, his transfer would represent a major financial outlay, something that Florentino Pérez seems keen to avoid in the short term.
While the opportunity to strengthen the defence is tempting, the Real Madrid president believes that the team can last until the end of the season with its current squad. This position contrasts with that of Ancelotti, who fears that the absence of reinforcements will further expose Los Merengues to increased competition in La Liga and the Champions League.
A winter window rarely exploited by Real Madrid
Historically, Real Madrid are not in the habit of spending massively during the winter window. Notable transfers such as those of Emmanuel Adebayor or Reinier remain exceptions in a strategy that is generally geared towards summer investments. This philosophy is in line with Pérez’s desire to favour stability and long-term management. However, the current situation could justify an exception, particularly given the regular injuries to key players such as Éder Militão and Dani Carvajal.
For Carlo Ancelotti, the dilemma is clear: continuing with a limited squad will force him to tinker tactically. The Italian coach knows that the second half of the season will be decisive, and he fears that the lack of options on the bench will limit his options against the big European teams. Despite a mixed start to the season, some shortcomings are apparent. The depth of the squad, particularly in defence and attack, is a cause for concern.
