The arrival of Ruben Amorim at the helm of Manchester United is not without consequences. One Red Devils star who sees his future in red is already thinking about leaving the club.
With Manchester United in the midst of a transitional period following the arrival of Ruben Amorim, a number of players recruited during Erik Ten Hag’s reign are in doubt. Brazilian winger Antony, recruited for a record fee of €100 million, is one of those who will not fit easily into the new Portuguese coach’s plans.
According to UtdDistrict, Antony has made no secret of his dissatisfaction with his current role in the team. Known as one of Erik Ten Hag’s protégés, with whom he shared a relationship of trust at Ajax, Antony now seems out of step with the tactical vision that Ruben Amorim wishes to install.
The Lusitanian coach, who is currently the subject of controversy for having refused to work with Ruud Van Nistelrooy, wants to favour a 3-4-3 system in order to require the flank players to be involved in both phases of the game, defensively and offensively. This is a departure from the more attacking, free-flowing position to which Antony is accustomed. Observers note that this system leaves little room for traditional wingers like Antony, who prefer to create attacking play and dribble. This tactical dilemma is jeopardising the Brazilian’s place in the Manchester United squad.
Antony’s departure already in sight
Sources close to the club suggest that Antony could ask to be transferred as early as January if his situation does not improve. He reportedly intends to meet with the club’s directors to discuss his role and future at Manchester United. Some media reports even suggest that Ruben Amorim has already told management that the Brazilian winger is not part of his plans for the future.
A potential transfer for Antony could mark a turning point in Manchester United’s plans. Recruited for a significant sum, his sale would represent a rejection of the recruitment policy introduced by Ten Hag. For Antony, a transfer could be the opportunity to regain a place of choice in a system that suits him better.
Ruben Amorim, renowned for his strict tactical style, is already making his mark on the Red Devils’ dressing room. He has clearly expressed his desire to adopt a style of play that suits his philosophy, even if it means parting company with players who do not fit in. United fans could be in for a real reshuffle, with priority given to players capable of meeting the demands of a fast, intensive and disciplined transitional game.
