It was expected a few hours after the court’s verdict. PSG reacted to the latest development in the Super League case with some harsh words.

Thursday was a small victory for the organisers and supporters of the Super League project. The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that the FIFA and UEFA regulations prohibiting the introduction of new competitions were contrary to European Union law. An illegal monopoly situation, then, and one that gives hope to the pro-Super League supporters. For the moment, there are two of Europe’s leading clubs: Barcelona and Real Madrid. Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, is totally opposed. The club from the capital has made this clear once again in a statement published on its social networks.

“Paris Saint-Germain totally and completely rejects any so-called Super League project, which has been the case since day one and will always remain the case,” the club from the capital first explained, via its president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, who is also head of the ECA and very close to UEFA boss Aleksander Čeferin.” As a proud European institution, PSG supports the principles of the European sporting model, the values of open competition and inclusion, and works with all the recognised stakeholders of European football – above all with the fans and players, who are at the heart of football,” said the boss of the Parisian stable.

Florentino Perez outlines the details of the Super League project
Today, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that the rules imposed by FIFA and UEFA on the creation of new competitions (such as the Super League) were quite simply contrary to European Union law. This is cause for jubilation among those pushing for this famous Super League, including Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid. In a lengthy speech on the morning of Thursday, he expressed his delight at the court ruling and outlined the project he wanted to put in place, while at the same time dismantling the current system.

Here is the press release from Real Madrid’s strongman, Florentino Perez:

“In the coming days, we will carefully examine the scope of this resolution, but I can already give you two conclusions of major historical importance. Firstly, European club football is not and never will be a monopoly. Secondly, from now on, clubs will be masters of their own destiny. Clubs now have full recognition of their right to offer and promote European competitions that modernise our sport and attract fans from all over the world. In the final analysis, the Europe of freedoms has triumphed today, as have football and its supporters.

In the face of the pressure we have been under for more than two years, law, reason and freedom now prevail. This is why Real Madrid will continue to work for the good of football.

Just as nearly seventy years ago we took a fundamental step forward in the history of football with the creation of the European Cup, today we have a duty and a responsibility to once again give European football the impetus it needs. To do this, we will continue to defend a modern project, fully compatible with national competitions, open to all, based on sporting merit and which will effectively impose compliance with financial fair play. A project that will provide economic stability for all clubs and, above all, will protect players and enthuse fans the world over.

Here is the press release from Real Madrid's strongman, Florentino Perez:

We will do this despite the campaigns we have been subjected to, which will undoubtedly intensify from here on in. But nobody said it would be easy to end a monopoly after so many decades. We now have a great opportunity to improve European club football. Football that is fit for the 21st century, with transparent governance, capable of coexisting with new technologies and rekindling the passion and emotion that fans really need.

Allow me to say to European clubs that we are at the dawn of a new era in which we can work in complete freedom, in a spirit of constructive dialogue, without threats, without acting against anything or anyone, with the aim of innovating and modernising football to continue to feed the passion of fans.

From now on, the present and future of European football are finally in the hands of the clubs, the players and their fans. Our destiny is our own, and we have a great responsibility.

Today will mark a decisive turning point. It is a great day for the history of football and for the history of sport.
